I will never forget the day my Uncle died. The details are fuzzy but the shock and the pain I felt are still very real. I was on my way to my future in laws house when my mother called. She asked to speak to my then boyfriend, now husband, we got off the interstate and into the parking lot at QT. We parked to the left away from the pumps, probably where most people would let their dogs use the pee…. and that is when I heard that my Uncle, the man that was a very significant male role model in my life, had suddenly died. My world crashed down that day and obviously so did my mothers. I felt sick, I felt dizzy, I felt like I was in a bad dream that I was hoping and praying I would wake up from soon. I can’t even tell you what happened the rest of the day… I don’t know if we turned around and went home or if we continued to his parents house…..all I remember is losing a great man that I loved with all my heart.
1 out of every 3 people die from cardiovascular disease? Heart Disease is the #1 killer of men and women in the U.S. today. My Uncle became a statistic that day because sadly he had a heart attack due to Heart Disease. I am pretty positive some of you reading this can relate to a similar story and if so I am deeply sorry and deeply burdened for the hurt you feel from that ugly disease. I love my precious Lord and so did my Uncle! I know he can make beautiful things from VERY BAD things. I know he can put people in our lives with knowledge to break generational health curses that run rampant in families. I hope if you are reading this you have the intentions of breaking a generational health curse or plan on stopping one before it starts.
February is Heart Healthy Month at Calhoun Spine and Wellness Center and with the help of our friend Dr. Jack Wolfson, Cardiologist, we can inform you of life changing habits that just might save your life. Join us as we learn how to live healthily in regards to Coronary Heart Disease, Triglycerides-to-HDL cholesterol ratios, and Blood Pressure. What are all these things you ask? Coronary heart disease, (CHD) is a condition caused by the buildup of waxy plaque in the arteries that flow to and from the heart that occurs when the small blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the heart narrow and sometimes harden, which over time can cause ruptures, heart attacks and other fatal conditions. Triglycerides-to-HDL cholesterol ratios show us good and bad cholesterol, When patients come into our office, many have had bloodwork done within the last year and of these people, many are told they have high cholesterol yet they really do not understand what that means. You may be following your cholesterol numbers in terms of the “good” cholesterol (HDL) or the “bad” cholesterol (LDL). But the best way to interpret your cholesterol numbers is to understand your cholesterol ratio, more specifically, your ratio of triglycerides to HDL cholesterol levels. In fact, a study published in the American Heart Association journal Circulation found that those people with the highest triglyceride-to-HDL cholesterol ratios had a sixteen times greater risk of heart disease than those with the lowest ratios. You want no more than a 2:1 ratio of triglycerides to HDL cholesterol. Anything outside of this range puts you at a higher risk for CHD. Blood Pressure is the pressure of circulating blood on the walls of blood vessels. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1 in 3 American adults (about 70 million people) have high blood pressure. About half have uncontrolled high blood pressure, which increases your risk for many serious health problems, including heart disease and stroke. In the video presentation Dr. Wolfson will explain how important knowing and understanding these numbers is in your life.
