Tune in to learn why this easy habit is worth starting today.

Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Blake Derrick with Calhoun Spine Care and Wellness Center here in Calhoun, Georgia. And today we’re talking about something so simple, it almost sounds too good to be true. Walking breaks during the workday. That’s it. Just getting up and walking around a little bit throughout your day. And I promise you, by the end of this episode, you’re going to want to start doing this today.

So let me ask you something. How many hours are you sitting right now? If you’re like most of the folks I see in my practice, the answer is probably a lot. And here’s the thing, our bodies were not designed to sit for eight, nine, ten hours straight. We were built to move. And when we don’t, our spines, our muscles, our joints, they all start to feel it.

Now here’s what’s interesting. When you sit for long periods of time, the muscles that support your lower back start to get tight and fatigued. Your hip flexors shorten up. Your core kind of checks out. And the discs in your spine, which rely on movement to stay hydrated and healthy, they start to lose that nourishment. That’s when you start feeling that dull ache in your lower back, that tension creeping up into your shoulders and neck. Sound familiar?

The good news is, you don’t have to run a marathon to fix this. You just have to move. Even a five minute walk every hour can make a real difference. When you stand up and start walking, blood flow increases throughout your body. Your muscles wake back up. The pressure on your spine shifts and releases. And those tight hip flexors start to lengthen. It’s like hitting a reset button on your whole system.

Here’s another thing most people don’t think about. Walking breaks are great for your focus and your mood too. When you move your body, your brain gets more oxygen. You come back to your desk feeling clearer and more alert. So this isn’t just good for your spine, it’s good for your whole day.

Now let me give you some practical advice you can start using right away. First, set a timer. Seriously, just set an alarm on your phone for every forty five to sixty minutes. When it goes off, stand up and walk. It doesn’t have to be far. Walk to get some water. Walk to a coworker’s desk instead of sending an email. Walk around the building if you can. Just get those legs moving.

Second, when you do stand up, take a second to check in with your posture. Roll your shoulders back, take a deep breath, and stand tall for a moment before you start walking. That little reset matters.

Third, if you can, try to get outside for at least one of those walks during the day. Fresh air, a little sunlight, and a change of scenery can do wonders for your mental and physical energy.

Now, here’s when you need to come see someone like me. If you’re already dealing with persistent back pain, neck pain, or that nagging stiffness that just won’t go away, walking breaks alone might not be enough. That could be a sign that something in your spine needs some attention. A chiropractic evaluation can help identify what’s going on and get you a plan to actually feel better, not just manage through the day.

We see a lot of folks here at Calhoun Spine Care and Wellness Center who waited too long to get checked out, and I always tell them the same thing. I wish you had come in sooner. Don’t wait until the pain is stopping you from doing what you love. Come in early, get ahead of it.

Alright, well that’s a wrap for today’s episode. I hope this gave you something simple and useful to take into your week. Remember, small movements add up to big changes over time. Your spine will thank you for it.
