my name is Cody from Calhoun Spine Care & Wellness. I’m the head trainer here and I want to talk a little bit today about lower back pain. One of the most common things I see in a gym setting that limits an individual’s ability to perform certain activities is lower back pain. So we do a lot, we go through a pretty good assessment process here to see if we can identify overactive, underactive muscles to try to help you with that.
And I’m going to show you one of those today. It’s called the overhead squat. Okay, Katie, come here. We’re going to want to see you from a wide view. Perfect. Okay. So she’s going to put the pole straight over her head. Okay. She’s going to go down into a squat position, keeping the pole overhead. This is a pretty good overhead squat.
She has a little bit of an arch in her back. So that’s an identifier for me. I’m going to have certain muscles I’m going to work out, but show us if you have a rounder back pain, okay? So some of us have this, some of us have just your arms completely falling forward. Can you show us that?
Perfect. All right, relax. So all these are identifying factors and helping us determine what can be the cause of your lower back pain. So if you’re experiencing any of this, try the overhead squat.
